DIY Photo Session at Gold Camp Road in Colorado Springs

Updated: Jan 8

As a photographer, sometimes it feels like the investment I've made in gear means I should be able to take my own family portraits. And nine times out of ten, it flops. This DIY Photo Session at Gold Camp Road in Colorado Springs, however, did not.

I intended to write a more detailed How To blog, but the truth is...I know nothing haha. Here are my only few tips:

  1. Invest in a trustworthy tripod. I used a junky one for years and I can't believe the difference a heavier duty tripod can make. This is the one I used.

  2. Use a bluetooth remote. (I used my phone and it was too bulky and tricky to hide.)

  3. Use a lower f-stop to have a better chance of in focus subjects.I used f/3.5.

  4. Let the kids be kids. Seriously. It's so much more realistic to let them play and be silly and count on these photos to be candid, not posed.

These are some of my favorite images and I am so proud of how they turned out.
